Iga Swiatek, Jessica Pegula cruise at Indian Wells
No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland and No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula made quick work of their third-round opponents at the BNP Paribas Open on Sunday in Indian Wells, Calif.
Swiatek, the defending champion, needed just 66 minutes to sweep Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska 6-0, 6-2. Swiatek won the first 10 games of the match to get close to a double bagel before Yastremska won on her final two serves.
Swiatek went 16-for-20 on her first-serve points, never facing a break point. She also won more first returns (19) than Yastremska had first-serve points (13) in a complete domination.
The former World No. 1 told reporters that the surface at Indian Wells suits her game.
“For sure, I feel like it makes it more visible, the topspin that I play,” Swiatek told reporters. “But I still have to play it. My game fits the surface here, yeah. The surface helps, but it’s not the only thing. You still need to do the job.”
Not to be outdone, Pegula beat China’s Xinyu Wang 6-2, 6-1 in just 62 minutes. Pegula converted 5 of 7 break points while saving 3 of 4 that she faced.
It was a sign that she is building on the momentum of her first title of 2025 last week at the ATX Open in Austin, Texas.
“A super-clean match on my side,” Pegula said. “Just coming off a week of winning gives you so much confidence. Makes you more match-tough, play the big points really well, controlling the matches. I’m just riding that momentum right now.”
Pegula’s next opponent will be Ukrainian No. 23 seed Elina Svitolina, who topped No. 14 seed Danielle Collins 6-2, 6-4.
No. 7 seed Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan beat No. 25 seed Katie Boulter of Great Britain 6-0, 7-5. Other winners included Czech 15th seed Karolina Muchova and Ukrainian 18th seed Marta Kostyuk.
Two matches concluded Sunday night. No. 9 seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia beat No. 22 seed Clara Tauson of Denmark 6-3, 6-0, while Chinese eighth seed Qinwen Zheng defeated New Zealand’s Lulu Sun 6-4, 7-5.
