Iga Swiatek dismisses claims of surface being only reason behind her success at Indian Wells

Iga Swiatek lost just four games in her first two matches in the ongoing Indian Wells, where she’s on a quest for a third title.

Iga Swiatek doesn’t think the surface is the only reason behind her performance at the Indian Wells Open. Swiatek is currently featuring in the season’s third WTA 1000 event, and is bidding to win her third title.

The World No.2 kick-started her Sunshine Doubles campaign with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Caroline Garcia. Her victory over Dayana Yastremska was no different, as she restricted the Ukrainian as well to just two games.

Swiatek, who last won a WTA title at the 2024 French Open, is a two-time Indian Wells champion, having won the tournament in 2022 and last year. She beat Maria Sakkari in both the finals.

Following her win over Yastremska, Swiatek was asked in the press conference whether the surface in the California desert is a key to her success. The Pole said that though the surface helps her, it’s not the only reason behind her success.

I always had time before to do solid work. It wasn’t like I was rushed anywhere. Sometimes in these one-week tournaments, there is no time to practice, for example. But here I always have that. I know I just feel comfortable and I found my rhythm also off the court to recover well. I guess it’s a mix of just being happy here and having a good life.

The 23-year-old hasn’t yet reached a singles final this season. She lost in the semifinals of the Australian Open, and in Doha and Dubai, she was defeated in the semifinals and quarterfinals, respectively.

Iga Swiatek is 20-2 at Indian Wells. She made her debut in the tournament in 2021 and made it to the fourth round. The following year, she won the title, but in 2023, she suffered a straight-set defeat to eventual winner Elena Rybakina in the semifinals.

The five-time Grand Slam champion, with her 6-0, 6-2 win over Dayana Yastremska, has registered her 31st bagel in WTA 1000 events. She is only behind Victoria Azarenka, who has 33 bagels in the same category.

I know I’m doing well. When I win 6-0, I feel encouraged, but at the same time, I don’t trust myself at all for the rest of the match because everything can change.

The second seed’s fourth-round opponent is 15th seed Karolina Muchova, who beat Katerina Siniakova in straight sets. Swiatek has faced Muchova four times and leads the head-to-head record 3-1. They last faced each other in this year’s United Cup, which Swiatek had won.
